El Dr. Varela ha sido honrado por los programas Fulbright y Ford/MacArthur de estudios avanzados y ha recibido premios en el campo del Urbanismo y la Sociología. Entre otros, el University of Wisconsin Scott Greer Award for Postgraduate Contributions to Urban Affairs; y el Honors Program American Sociological Association.

Ha sido seleccionado por la comunidad internacional para liderar emprendimientos a nivel global de apoyo al desarrollo sostenible. Entre otros, como miembro del United Nations-Harvard “Right to Development High-Level Expert Team” y para liderar los primeros informes de evaluación de objetivos a nivel mundial de World Vision International.

Su contribución a la planificación y evaluación, le han valido varias distinciones. Entre otras, se destacan la de conferencista invitado de la Casa Blanca por el Ministerio de Vivienda y Desarrollo Urbano de los Estados Unidos y del Consejo de Gabinete de la República de Panamá por el Gabinete Social.

Dr. Varela has been honored by the Fulbright and Ford/MacArthur programs for advanced studies and he has been the recipient of awards in the fields of Urban Studies and Sociology. These include, among others, the University of Wisconsin Scott Greer Award for Postgraduate Contributions to Urban Affairs; and the Honors Program of the American Sociological Association.

He has been also chosen by the international community to lead sustainable development initiatives at the global level. These include, among others, the United Nations-Harvard “Right to Development High-Level Expert Team” and to lead World Vision International´s first reports on global targets.

Because of his contributions to the fields of planning and evaluation, he has received various distinctions . Among others, he has been an invited speaker at the US White House Conference by the US Department of Housing and Urban Development and by the President´s Cabinet at the Republic of Panamá by the President´s Social Cabinet.
